India to tax inbound prepaid freight charges

Notifications received from the Government of India announce the application of service tax on prepaid oceanfreight charges effective 22.01.2017.

Previously exempted, all prepaid freight components will now be subject to 4.5% service tax.

Shipping Lines are said to collect these charges directly from cargo receivers at destination.
